The 34-year-old batsman-wicketkeeper will compete with South Africans Hashim Amla and Vernon Philander and Australian Test captain Michael Clarke for the Garfield Sobers Trophy.

All four have also been nominated for the Test cricketer of the year, while Sangakkara also features in the shortlist for the one-day and people's awards.

The winners will be announced in Colombo on September 15.

Sangakkara's rivals for the one-day cricketer of the year include team-mate Lasith Malinga, and Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Virat Kohli of India.

An independent 32-person panel comprising former players and representatives from the media, match referees and umpires drew up the shortlists.

Cricketers receiving the highest number of votes from the panel will be adjudged the winners.

Performances over a 12-month period that ended on August 6, 2012 were taken into account.

Doug Bracewell of New Zealand, Sri Lanka's Dinesh Chandimal, Sunil Narine of the West Indies and Australia's James Pattinson were nominated for the emerging cricketer of the year award.

SLPL has given Lanka edge ahead of T20 WC: Malinga

COLOMBO: Sri Lanka pacer Lasith Malinga feels that his side will have a distinct advantage over other countries during next month's Twenty20 World Cup as most of the island nation's players have prepared well by competing in the Sri Lanka Premier League.

"SLPL is a good preparation for the Twenty20 World Cup. All the Sri Lankan players know the conditions very well and we have a chance to win the Twenty20 World Cup," Malinga, who captained Ruhuna Royals in the SLPL, told reporters after his side's match against Wayamba United.

"It is advantage for us and we are ready for the Twenty20 World Cup," he added.

Ruhuna crashed out of the SLPL after losing to table toppers Wayamba by 12 runs and Malinga said that his players were their best as many youngsters have are not used to such T20 leagues.

"It's the first year of SLPL and the local players are yet to adjust to T20 leagues. They don't know how to play T20 cricket. They will learn and get better in future. It's a good thing for Sri Lanka," he said.

Malinga was not satisfied with his own performance in the SLPL but said that he hoped to do well in the Twenty20 World Cup.

"Definitely, my performance was not up to the mark. But I am hoping that I will do well in the Twenty20 World Cup," said Malinga who took seven wickets from six matches.

Malinga's side lost four matches out of the six in the league phase of SLPL to end the tournament at fifth spot.

Sri Lankan skipper Mahela Jayawardene also backed Malinga's views.

"In a way it was a good preparation but I was a bit worried that injuries might happen to the players just so near the Twenty20 World Cup.

"We had some injuries to players but fortunately they will be OK for the T20 World Cup. In all, there were more positives from the SLPL than the negatives," he said.

The Slinga, The Pocket Rocket, The Sidewinder

Name
Lasith Malinga

Aka
The Slinga, The Pocket Rocket, The Sidewinder

The hair
Malinga's coiffure has been produced by a Bollywood set designer who was given unfettered access to the finest blowtorches, acids and polymers known to man. Or rather more prosaically, by Colombo hairdresser Nishantha Jayasekera, who took a mere two days over his confection. "Malinga likes to stand out, so he goes for unusual styles unlike the other well-known cricketers," said Jayasekera. Now you tell us.

The action
Malinga learned his cricket on the beaches of Hikkaduwa, Sri Lanka's west-coast tourist paradise, with a tennis ball that was shaved and then burned to make it harder. Hence the round-arm action, so the ball didn't bounce miles high, see? "The first time I ever picked up a leather ball, it felt so heavy, so strange, like something from out of the world," he revealed.

The quirk
He kisses the ball before he runs up, because when you're the sexiest cricketer alive - more of which later - you're allowed to do just about anything. Sort of like Sreesanth, then, though much less irritating.

Notable claim to fame
He took four in four against South Africa in a World Cup game, shaving a few years off the lifespans of the South African team and making a cigarette smoker out of Graeme Smith in the process.

Dubious claim to fame
Malinga almost brought about a change in the colour of the umpires' trousers after the opposition claimed his release was not visible against the black of said trousers.

What you may not have known about him
He used to be good at math in school.

Motto
If you don't sling, don't ring.

Secret weapon
Malinga recently consulted a doctor who "works with supernatural powers and herbs", Eliyantha White, who helped him overcome injury and speed to fitness again. "I don't know what he does and how he does it but it works," Malinga beamed.

Favourite musical
Hair!

Favourite umpire
Er, maybe not.

Favourite movie
Edward Scissorhands

Favourite song
"Freak Like Me"

Anything else?
Yes, our Lasith has a subversively pierced eyebrow - all the better to distract the batsman with cunning glints of sunlight off the stud embedded therein.

Statutory tagline
No skunks were harmed in the making of this player.

What they say
"He is a good cricketer, but not a decent-looking gentleman."
Ranjith Chandrasekera, a Sri Lankan who was singularly unimpressed with Malinga being voted the sexiest cricketer at the last World Cup

What he's promised to do if he becomes Prime Minister of Sri Lanka

SLPL Official Logos

Sri Lanka Premier League (SLPL) last evening unveiled its logo in a carnival of passion for cricket at an event held at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel in Colombo.   The organizers of the event said accordingly, in 25 days or even before, cricket fever is certain to sweep the country, dwarfing all other activities.  This event is expected to give a major fillip to the country’s tourism, leisure and entertainment industry.

The 24-game contest, featuring seven teams named after selected provinces of the country and involving 112 local and 56 global players, will begin on 10 August with a mega ceremony. The matches will be played in Colombo and Pallekelle.

Dharmadasa said that the SLPL would be a big boost for Under 21 cricketers, Team players, National Squad members and top stars locally as well as globally would get an opportunity to play competitive cricket with some of the world’s best names in the Twenty 20 game.

The former Sri Lankan skipper Kumar Sangakkara said this is a great opportunity to promote Sri Lankan players and uplift Sri Lankan cricket while upholding the MCC spirit of cricket. He said that although a lot of foreign stars will feature in the tournament, Sri Lankan cricket will take center stage. He said that hopefully SLPL will be a stepping stone for a feast of talented cricketers thus creating healthy competition among them in order to have a top notched pool to choose from.

Organizers of the tournament said that the SLPL has thus far been a success by attracting $ 30 million in bids for the seven provincial franchises for seven years with an average price of US$ 4.33 million each. The seven franchises and their icon players are Basnahira (Western) Province – Tillakaratne Dilshan; Kandurata (Central) Province – Kumar Sangakkara, Nagenahira (Eastern) Province –  Angelo Matthews; Ruhuna (Southern) Province –  Lasith Malinga; Uthura (Northern) Province – Muttiah Muralitharan; Uva (South East) Province  –  Chris Gayle and Wayamba (North West) Province – Mahela Jayawardena. Will Sri Lanka Cricket ban Lasith Malinga for refusing to sign contract?

Lasith Malinga may be banned from the Sri Lankan team as he refused to sign a contract with the Sri Lankan cricket board. The cricketer didn’t sign the contract citing low payments as the reason, Zee News reported on Wednesday.

The report also said that the Sri Lankan Government is considering temporary bans on national sportspersons who refuse to represent Sri Lanka at a point in time.

Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage was quoted by Zee News, “"We are having issues mostly in cricket and rugby where national team players often refuse to represent the country when the national team has a scheduled tour and at times opt to play for some other event. So we are now looking at bringing in amendments to the sports law to allow sporting bodies to temporarily ban such players."

The slingy fast bowler was named amongst the players who were offered contracts. Such a contract would prevent him from playing in tournaments such as the Indian Premier League (IPL), i.e. if it clashes with a Sri Lankan assignment.

Sri Lanka ease to T20 win over Pakistan

HAMBANTOTA, Sri Lanka — Sri Lanka put on a brilliant bowling and fielding performance to post a comfortable 37-run victory over Pakistan in their opening Twenty20 international on Friday.
Pakistan were bowled out for 95, their lowest T20 total against Sri Lanka, after restricting the hosts to 132-7 in Hambantota.
Sri Lankan pacemen Nuwan Kulasekera, Angelo Mathews and Lasith Malinga and debutant off-spinner Sachithra Senanayake took two wickets apiece after man-of-the-match Thisara Perera scored a crucial 32 not out.

Opener Ahmed Shehzad top-scored for Pakistan with 36 while the extras contributed 19 runs, the second-highest of the innings. Umar Akmal (12) was the other batsman to reach double-figures.
Pakistan never recovered after losing two wickets off the first two balls of the innings, with Kulasekera removing skipper Mohammad Hafeez and debutant Shakeel Ansar.

The Sri Lankan bowlers were backed by their fielders, with Perera and Kulasekera each taking a superb catch.
"The fielding was brilliant and all the bowlers did well. It was a challenging wicket and we did not assess it well when we batted," said Sri Lanka skipper Mahela Jayawardene.

Left-arm paceman Sohail Tanvir earlier grabbed three big wickets as Pakistan restricted Sri Lanka.
He jolted the top order when he dismissed Jayawardene, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Kumar Sangakkara in his opening three overs to reduce the hosts to 31-3.

Tanvir finished with 3-12 off four tight overs, his best performance in Twenty20 internationals, while off-spinner Saeed Ajmal bagged two wickets for 20 runs.

"Perera made the difference," said Pakistan captain Hafeez.
"We had our moments but couldn't capitalise on them. Tanvir was brilliant and the spinners did the job. I feel we have to work and come hard in the next game."
Perera smashed two sixes and as many fours in his 16-ball knock to help his team make 43 runs off the last 22 balls.
Lahiru Thirimanne, making his T20 debut, was the other main scorer with a 25-ball 30.
Sri Lanka made a poor start after electing to bat, losing four wickets in the opening eight overs with just 39 on the board.
Tanvir struck with his third delivery when he had Jayawardene caught by Shoaib Malik in the covers and then had Dilshan caught by Umar Gul at fine-leg in his next over.
Sangakkara (19) hit three successive fours off paceman Mohammad Sami before he inside-edged a Tanvir delivery onto his stumps.

The second and final Twenty20 match will be played on Sunday.

Sri Lanka Cricket to slash benefits given to Lasith Malinga

May 31, Colombo: Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) sources say that the authorities of SLC have decided to cut the benefits granted to fast bowler Lasith Malinga.

SLC has come to this decision since Malinga has declined to come to an agreement with the SLC. He was reportedly demanding a better remuneration package from SLC.

However, the SLC has not so far announced the decision.

If the SLC decision is implemented, Malinga will lose the insurance coverage, gymnasium facilities, medical and physiotherapy facilities and sports apparel etc. for which SLC bears a huge expense, sources say.

Lasith has two dates written in his right arm tatto. One is the date he started playing for Sri Lankan cricket team and the second is the date when he took for wickets in consecutive four balls.

There is also another significant name written in that right forarm. Guess what ? Yes it is het wife's name. Lasith wife is Tanya Perera

Malinga Test Cricket Debut

He made his Test debut on the July 1–3, 2004, at Darwin's Marrara Oval. He was immediately successful, taking 6 wickets in the match (Darren Lehmann twice, Adam Gilchrist, Damien Martyn, Shane Warne andMichael Kasprowicz) He was impressed by the friendliness of the Australian team in general, and in particular Adam Gilchrist who sought him out after the game to present him with one of the match stumps in the Sri Lankan dressing room.

Malinga's Delivery Action

The cricket reference text Wisden has noted that Malinga's delivery action is similar to "slinging". Malinga has said that his unique action was a result of learning to play cricket exclusively with a tennis ball.Typically, younger bowlers are encouraged to deliver the ball with their arm near vertical to remove or reduce direction variables.
Malinga's action has attracted great comment, but has never been formally questioned; he has not been reported or called for throwing.
